1.

Client business challenges

As a leading global manufacturer and solution provider of specialty polymers and additives for industrial coatings, composites and other applications, allnex puts high attention to Sustainability and has an advanced Sustainability program.

A key focus of allnex's Sustainability program is quantifying the cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint of its broad and complex global product portfolio across all locations.

The company’s main goal is to develop eco-friendly solutions for the different applications they serve, while achieving a CO2 emission absolute reduction of 30% by 2030 for scope 1 & 2.

2.

BearingPoint’s contribution

To tackle these challenges, allnex collaborated with BearingPoint to implement a customized carbon accounting solution, mapping its Scope 1, Scope 2, and upstream value chain Scope 3 emissions. A user-friendly interface allowed allnex to seamlessly transfer data from its ERP system to BearingPoint’s Emission Calculator tool in an efficient, automated, and rapid manner.

The most emission-intensive area for allnex is scope 3.1. which tracks emissions from purchased goods & services from different suppliers. BearingPoint prioritized the integration of this module to provide allnex detailed insights into emissions related to raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products. This allowed the company to address its larger emission sources early in the process. The next stages of the projects focused on emissions from allnex’s facilities (scope 1&2) and transportation (scope 3.4. and 3.9.). Finally all relevant scope categories were consolidated in a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) accordance with GHG protocol,  ISO 14067 and Together for Sustainability Guideline.

allnex had some specific requirements, and the BearingPooint’s Emission Calculator was customed to accomodate these needs, ensuring consistency across allnex’s operations and at the same time, that the solution is scalable and adaptable to different business contexts.

3.

Client business outcomes

The pilot and roll-out delivered tangible benefits for allnex, gaining a clear view of their emissions across all operations, better understanding of emission sources, and their product life-cycle. The journey towards actionable insights included assessing over 7400 raw materials, calculation for over 1 million of semi-finished products in 5 year period, whereas the number of shipments calculated is almost 600,000. As of today more than 7000 distinct product outputs have been calculated for year 2023 and system is fully integrated and live for 23 plants.

Lastly, as part of the service, allnex benefits from continuous updates from global standards such as GHG protocol, ISO 14064, ISO 14067 or GLEC. This ensures that allnex is well-prepared to meet internal audit requirements and stay compliant with future sustainability regulations and laws.
