Carbon neutrality is on everyone's mind. Global warming must be limited to well below 1.5 degrees Celsius. The industry also has a role to play in this - the CO2 footprint of products and services must be reduced for the entire life cycle (cradle-to-cradle) and across the entire value chain, including Scope 3.

For their own value creation, so-called Scope 1 and 2, companies generally have primary data on energy consumption and CO2 emissions from measurements or invoices.  The situation is more difficult for outsourced services (Scope 3), which are provided by suppliers or partners. These are a black box for many companies and, although they usually account for more than 80% of a company's total emissions, many companies use estimates, industry averages or values from LCA databases for this area.

However, against the backdrop of increasing regulatory constraints (CBAM, CSRD, EU Green Deal, etc.), the use of average values or secondary data for Scope 3 is becoming increasingly limited. What is needed is primary CO2 data at product level along the supply chain - a standardized, system-supported exchange of CO2 data along the supply chain is therefore required.

The SAP Sustainability Data Exchange solution, which was developed together with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), serves precisely this use case. By joining forces with Catena-X, this could become a game changer for the automotive industry for exchanging CO2 values across the vehicle manufacturing and supply chain. As BearingPoint we are part of the Catena-X initiative to drive sustainability forward.
